The Swedish Massage is also commonly referred to as western classic massage, created by physiotherapist Pehr Henrik Ling (1776-1839).
It lays the foundation of the various massage techniques. Swedish massage techniques include: long gliding strokes (effleurage), kneading (petrissage), friction, tapping, percussion, vibration, plus stretching and bending motions.
Among the many benefits, a classic massage will stimulate blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, will decontract the muscles, and will relax and tonify the body.
The treatment is performed using just a little oil and with the patient on a massage table. Usually a Swedish Massage is applied to the whole body, however, if required, can be applied only to selected parts.
The therapist uses the hands, the forearms and elbows, seeking to produce a general relaxation, relieve muscles stiffness, stimulate bloodstream and alleviate pain.
This type of massage can be very useful also in some cases of edema, and improves the natural body self-healing mechanism that may occur in case of musculo-skeletal injuries.
