Ayurvedic Massage (Abyangam)
Ayurvedic Massage, (Abyangam) belongs to traditional Indian medicine, its origins date back to 5.000 years ago and it is considered to be one of the most effective techniques to restore harmony between the body and the mind.
The ayurvedic massage is a treatment that uses warm oils prepared following the ayurvedic traditions and it is extremely relaxing because it acts upon the energetic points and lines of the body, helping in eliminating toxins through purification, enhances muscle tone, improves flexibility of the joints, relaxes and rejuvenates the body giving sheen to the sking. The treatment is performed by effleurage (long, gliding strokes), petrissage (lifting and kneading the muscles) and other traditional massage techniques.
A relaxing massage is performed following the method of snehana, which means “anoint, caress and communicate with another being”. The whole body of the patient is massaged with warm oils, head to toe, adapting the techniques depending on the predominance of on of the three vital energy, i dosha, whose balance, according to the ayurvedic phylosophy, regulates the psyco-physical health.
In fact it is a holistic and personalized massage.
Its specific benefits are: it is relaxing, providing a general sensation of wellbeing, it eliminates both physical and mental fatigue. It is detoxifying, it fortifies the body, facilitates blood and lymphatic circulation, improves sleep, boosts the immune system, balances the nervous system, stimulates digestion eliminating constipation, reduces stagnation of the fluids, fights menstrual pain, renders the skin softer and makes it shine and slows down aging.
It is a light massage, because the lymphatic system is situated at the surface, and it is slow, because it has to collect the interstitial fluid in excess and convey it through the lymphatic channels. It facilitates the depuration, as it cleans the body from viruses, bacterias and anomalous cells, eliminates stagnation of the fluids, combats cellulitis and oatmeal, resolves venous insufficiency.
It is a rather vigorous massage and it is performed by applying and rubbing specific powders, it is recommended for overweight people.
Eliminates the adipose in excess, restores body weight, produces lightness, removes dead cells gently opening the pores, hydrates dry skin, helps in eliminating cellulitis and oatmeal and it also alleviates itching and rash.
Head and Facial
It is a particularly relaxing treatment, restores balance, pacifies the mind and stretches the facial muscles that may be contracted by negative emotions. It starts performing acupressure on the marma points (energy points), followed by effleurage and petrissage.
It removes stress, anxiety and anger, oxygenates tissues, relieves headaches, migraines, scalp issues, rebalances the nervous system, enhances sensorial stimulation, improves sight, hearing and nose, helps the thyroid gland function at its best.
It is a massage that is performed by alternating pressure and gliding; it is then completed with the stimulation of the marma points, to open up the energy channels and stimulate the areas concerned. It is particularly recommended for musculoskeletal contractures and for fatigue buildup.
Removes rigidity of the joints, relieves muscular tensions, improves the flow of body fluids, gives elasticity and restores vigour and energy.
It is a massage with a lot of gentle gliding and it aims to work at the energetic level and consequently also on the physical one.

It can be used effectively to prevent or solve many small persistent or even chronic disorders.
It generates a great sense of balance and on the physical level has a great detoxifying effect, it improves joints’ mobility, removes bone chills, reduces lymphatic congestion, reactivates circulation, relieves frozen shoulder.
Pinda sweda (a massage with warm bolus) may be used as preparation, this is used mainly to remove stiffness from the body.
Kalari (release blocked joints)
The purpose of this particular massage is that of unblocking and mobilize the joints, making them more flexible and stronger. The deepest tensions are released and the stretching movements increase the flexibility.
It is indicated for athletes and for anybody feeling rather contracted, stiff, or for who is affected by osteoarthritis, rheumatism, arthritis, spondylosis, hernia and for post-traumatic treatments.
It has to be performed extremely slowly, with fluency and finesse. The patient may lay on the floor, or be seated, and with the help of the respiration is taken to the limit.
This process of recovery happens very slowly, with time; still, the benefits are tangible since the first session.
Depending on the necessity, the Kalari massages are performed either on a few parts, or on the entire body.
